LAWRENCEVILLE – The maturation of the Chapel Hill Panthers continues. Falling behind 34-7 in the second quarter, the Panthers roared back with 24 unanswered points only to fall short in a 34-31 road defeat at the hands of the central Gwinnett black Knights. “It’s exciting to come back, but it still hurts to lose,” said head coach, Chris Parker. “We don’t look for moral victories, but I’m proud of how we came back.”
Chapel Hill will be looking for their first win of the season this Friday when they travel to Central Gwinnett. The Panthers are also hoping to avoid something that has never happened under the three-year watch of head coach Chris Parker.
“We haven’t lost back-to-back games since I’ve been here,” Parker said at Tuesday’s practice. “It’s been nice when we’ve lost in the season we’ve been able to win the next week.”
In order for the Panthers to do that, they will have to put last week’s 31-21 loss to East Coweta and stay focused on Central Gwinnett.
Here are the Region 5-AAAA standings after week 1 as published by the Georgia High School Football Daily.
For the first time in the three-year coaching stint of the Chris Parker era, the Chapel Hill Panthers start the season 0-1.
While the scoreboard at Panther Stadium may have shown a 31-21 final, the Panthers had plenty of things to feel good about despite losing to East Coweta.
“It’s always disappointing when you lose but I was very impressed with their effort,” Parker said.
“We know when you when you schedule a team like East Coweta, you might win and be 1-0 or lose and be 0-1. Our job is to win the six sub-region games. We’re going to get better. I definitely thought we were better than the scrimmage last week.”
Senior A.J. Lidell received the opening kick-off at the Panther 5 and raced through, over and around the Indians for the score, bringing the Chapel Hill fans to their feet.
