LOVEJOY, Ga. – The Chapel Hill Panthers were looking to take out some frustration after last week’s Homecoming loss to Pebblebrook.

The lucky recipient? Mundy’s Mill.

Chapel Hill’s Johnathan Parks scored on runs of 17, 6 and 55 yards to pace the Panthers in a 28-14 win over Mundy’s Mill, spoiling their Homecoming on Saturday, Oct. 10 at Twelve Oaks Stadium.

The Panther defense also caused plenty of havoc on the Mundy’s Mill offense. Quarterback sacks combined with three key interceptions helped guide the Panther victory.

“We did to a pretty good job of playing some team football…that was better than we’ve been doing,” head coach Chris Parker.

The Panthers (4-2, 3-2) took the opening kick-off from their own 20 and marched down field. The drive featured punishing inside runs by Mario Cannon, some passing from D’Shawn Abercrombie and outside runs by Parks.

That first drive was capped when Parks bounced to the right off tackle and found a seam to the endzone. James Harris converted the first of his four PATs to give the Panthers a 7-0 lead.

After a series of swapped punts by both teams, the Panthers were back in business when Trent White returned a short Tiger punt to their own 27.

It didn’t take long before Parks again found the endzone. This time, a huge gap opened in the line, Parks raced through leveling a Tiger defender in the process. The score increased the Panther lead 14-0 with 8:20 left in the first half.

A defensive stand ensued in the next seven minutes with both teams swapping fumbles, Mundy Mill punting and Chapel Hill converting on fourth down and giving up a turnover on another fourth down.

With just 60 seconds left in the half, the Tigers went to the air to try to erase the goose egg on the scoreboard. Heavy pressure by the Panther defensive front line forced the Tigers into a lobbed pass in the middle of the defense. Panther linebacker Tim Potate, who was all alone in the middle of the defense, grabbed the ball and raced over 80 yards for the touchdown. That increased the lead 21-0 before the half.

The Tigers had one more shot before the break but Chapel Hill’s Javon Wilson intercepted his first of two passes on the night to end the drive.

In the second half, Parks again found the endzone, this time ripping off a 55 yard burst. That score was set-up by Wilson’s second pick of the game.

Mundy’s Mill did manage late to score on a seven-yard run and a questionable 30-yard pass to the corner of the endzone.

Chapel Hill is on the road again for a key 4-AAAAA contest when they visit East Coweta on Friday, Oct. 16. Kick-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. So bring some friends and come out to support the Panthers!

  1. Good win! But the Seniors need to step up and hold each other accountable and lead the rest of the team in practice this week.Go 100% at practice because the schedule gets much tougher!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Well said! The ‘drive for five’ is attainable but it takes a TOTAL TEAM effort.
